The OPC Media Crew
Dean Baker is co-owner of OPC Media an independent media company with his friend and business partner Riccardo Borgia.
Born in London, Dean has been privileged to have worked for some of the biggest companies in the world. A born explorer who believes that you need to be passionate about what you are doing as it makes your job effortless.
Starting his working career at the NJY camps America as a Lifeguard and Canoeing Specialist Dean was responsible for taking groups for excursions on the Delaware river in Pennsylvania. After two life changing summers at the NJY camps. Dean secured a job as a Guest Service Attendant at the highly acclaimed Four Seasons Resort and Residences Whistler Canada.
The Resort received the coveted AAA Five Diamond award – it is the only resort in all of Canada with this distinguished rating. AAA Five Diamond hotels and resorts reflect the ultimate in luxury and sophistication.
With this experience Dean moved onto Australia for a year to continue his traveling and working in hospitality. At the age of 23 an opportunity came up to return to the UK and work at the Hilton hotel.
A year later Dean decided to transfer his skills from hospitality to sports stadium management. Moving to the iconic Kia Oval stadium in Kennington London. The Oval has hosted a number of historically significant sporting events and is owned by the Duchy of Cornwall, Prince Charles. This position gave Dean the freedom to grow his skill set and bring his hotel background into a sports stadium environment.
At this time Dean started to build a small independent media company with his now business partner Riccardo, although just a hobby they have worked with artists, musicians and sports clubs to improve their social media exposure and brand image.
Working for OCS a specialist business in facility services management, Dean took care of tasks that aren’t part of Kia Ovals core business that included Housekeeping, maintenance, security and match day staff. In this role he was involved in all major facilities management tenders for contracts.
After a successful 4 years in London at the Oval Dean was offered a Position in the Facility’s management team at OCS New Zealand, working with brands such as, Sky City, Air NZ and Coca Cola. His role securing these contracts was using his extensive knowledge of facilities management, a rare skill set in that selected field and that deemed to be instrumental in these bids being successful.
This lead to Dean becoming the national facilities manager for Coca Cola. As part of this role Dean managed a $2.5 million budget with the main focus being to introduce cost saving and energy saving measures all while battling to future proof the buildings across NZ. Dean handpicked the right people to work around him to help him achieve them targets.
Even though Dean had a promising career and job security he did not feel he had the full freedom to make his own decisions and be able to express himself the way he would like to, so he made the brave decision to go with his passion of videography and run his own business.
Riccardo Borgia is Co-Owner of OPC Media an independent media company that finally gave him a chance to demonstrate his passion for videography.
Born in London in the late 80s Riccardo first discovered his love for videography growing up and watching some of greatest directors such as Quentin Tarantino, Tony Scott, The Coen Brothers and Roberto Benigni to name just a few. He first got his chance to explore this passion during a 6th Form College course and then further his growing knowledge by attending and completing with distinction a BA (Hons) TV and Video Production degree at Southampton Solent University.
Rather than pursue a career, after leaving university Riccardo decided to follow another path which had always intrigued him, travel. This would take him around the world from Europe to Asia to Australasia to N.America.
During this time Riccardo was still following his hunger for videography in his spare time while carving out a career in the Marketing field. Riccardo has over 4 years’ experience in online and affiliate marketing, working for companies including Traffic Junction and Inspire Digital. During his time with Traffic Junction he was quickly promoted from Data Entry Specialist to Database Manager leading and organising a big team, while in that time the company were voted 30th in the top 100 fastest growing businesses.
Whilst in New Zealand Riccardo went through a career change in a strive to find a job which matched his growing obsession with videography. He decided to try the role of Senior Compliance Officer for a high profile Bank. In this role he was responsible for AML compliance providing support to the business by recognising gaps in AML compliance and recommending remedial action to relevant staff as well as providing results and consulting with the heads of all four business units.
It was during this time that he decided that he could no longer fight the urge to follow his passion and a commitment he made to videography all those years ago watching those great directors and took the steps necessary to start his own company with friend and now business partner Dean Baker.
Riccardo is not someone who is content and happy to plod along in a job, he is rather someone who is always striving to be the best for himself and the company he now owns. He is always looking to push onto the next level and push his colleagues to do the same, which is the attitude adopted by OPC Media.
